The most significant element for us as a responsible company is ensuring longevity through quality and timeless designs. Providing the right care for your garments is an important part of nurturing and sustaining a long-lasting wardrobe, while simultaneously being better for the planet. We hope that you will find these tips helpful when caring for your UNIKSPACE pieces. Please always read the care label on each garment before using any of the tips below.

It’s in the nature of natural fibres to fade and soften with wear and wash. We think this is part of the charm working with these beautiful fabrications. Using these tips will help to keep your garments looking newer for longer.

AIRING

Take a thoughtful approach when caring for your garments and wash less often.Sometimes all you need to do to regain a fresh feeling, is air it outside, or inside in an open window. Make sure you hang it in the shade if it’s a coloured garment, however white garments thrive from hanging in the sun.

SPOT CLEANING

It’s often better, and more effective, to spot clean in the moment than washing the whole garment. This also saves on water and energy. Try a little bit of soap, water and a dry and clean cloth to gently remove any marks.Alternatively, you can use a soft nail brush or clean toothbrush with cold water and gently rub the stain off. Please be extra careful spot cleaning coloured and delicate garments as it can leave a mark on the fabric if rubbed too much.

HANDWASHING

Handwashing is more environmentally friendly than machine wash or dry cleaning. It’s gentle on fabrics, saves on the use of water and energy, while also not requiring the use of harsh chemicals that is usually used when dry cleaning. If you’re not comfortable handwashing your delicate garments, try taking your clothes to a ‘Green Dry Cleaner’ who should be using less chemicals, and adhere to a more eco-conscious approach than regular places.

DRYING

We recommend to always hang your clothes to dry and avoid tumble dryers. If it’s a coloured garment make sure you hang it to dry in the shade or indoors, to avoid fading. You can however always put your white garments in the sun to enjoy the effect of natural bleach and antibacterial refreshing.

MENDING

Treat the clothes you own as a long-term investment. Maintaining pieces will help to ensure they don’t need mending often, and when they do, always consider repairing them before replacing. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns with mending and maintenance.

A SECOND LIFE

Even though our pieces are made for the timeless wardrobe, it’s best to give it a new home, or to recycle the materials when possible, if you no longer wish to keep them. Donating a garment gives it a second life, and there are many ways you can do this. You can share some love by giving the piece you no longer wear to a friend, or donate to a local charity shop or initiative. Alternatively you can list the pieces you no longer wear online to re-sell.

Cotton, Linen, Hemp/Cotton

Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and a natural detergent if washing in the machine. This will avoid shrinkage and prolongs the quality of the garment.

Always wash with similar colours.

Avoid softeners, bleaches and tumble drying.

If hand washing, pop it into a bucket with some natural detergent and gently rub the garment using water and soap.

Rinse with cold water.

Hang in the shade to dry to preserve the colour.

Hang in the sun if washing whites.

Silk, Silk/Linen

Our silk and silk/linen garments are very delicate, and we recommend eco dry-cleaning. If you want more of an eco friendly way to look after these garments than dry-cleaning, you can gently hand wash these by carefully following these instructions:

Put the garment in a tub of cold water and gentle detergent. Leave to soak.

After a few minutes rinse the garment in cold water until all the detergent has been removed.

To dry, put the garment into a clean towel and gently roll. This will absorb the moisture.

After rolling, leave the garment lying flat on a dry towel and leave to dry in the shade or indoors. Avoid direct sunlight as this can harm the fibres and discolour the garment.

Silk georgette

Our silk georgette pieces, the Taylor blouse and Cullen dress, are extra delicate and we recommend quality dry cleaning for these garments.

If you are brave enough to try hand washing, please use cold water only, roll dry with a towel and hang to dry in shade.

Use a steamer once the garment has dried and avoid ironing, honouring the crinkle effect of this fabric.

Linen/Silk lining

We recommend dry cleaning these pieces to ensure the shape and quality of the garment remain. Use an eco dry cleaner if you can. If you want more of an eco friendly way to look after these garments than dry cleaning, you can gently hand wash these by carefully following these instructions:

Put the garment in a tub of cold water and gentle detergent. Leave to soak.

After a few minutes rinse the garment in cold water until all the detergent has been removed.

To dry, put the garment into a clean towel and gently roll. This will absorb the moisture.

After rolling, leave the garment lying flat on a dry towel and leave to dry in the shade or indoors. Avoid direct sunlight as this can harm the fibres and discolour the garment.
